Les Charmes premier cru

Appellation: Premier Cru
Area under vine:
0.188 hectares (4.39 ouvrées)
Located at an altitude of 260-280 metres, the thin layer of soil on the slope is close to the parent rock. Numerous fissures in the hard limestone enable the roots to find nourishment in the Jurassic-period subsoil. Large and small-sized gravel ensure good drainage.
Sun exposure:
South-east facing.
Grape variety:
100% Pinot Noir
When planted: 100% in 1982
Vineyard: The vines are grown without the use of pesticides or insecticides, and only natural fertiliser (manure) is used. Ploughing keeps the soil loose and well-aerated, and no weed killers are applied.
Fermentation: The grapes are hand picked into small crates, sorted in the vat room, and 100% destemmed. Cold fermentation for 7 days is followed by temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation with two pigeages (punching the cap) a day and maceration for 21 days.
Barrel-ageing: Aged on the lees in oak barrels (30% new) for 15 months, with late-occurring, natural malolactic fermentation. Neither fined nor filtered. Racked and bottled by gravity flow.
Tasting notes: Bright ruby-red colour with brilliant, luminous highlights. Typical of its noble origin, the bouquet has hints of violet and red fruit (strawberry and raspberry). When aged, ripe fruit and spicy aromas appear, along with prune, truffle, forest floor and musky nuances. Rich, aromatic, and complex on the palate, Les Charmes has a texture of silk and lace. Its delicate body is in no way at odds with its solid structure and excellent ageing potential. Fairly soft and caressing tannin, with restrained acidity.
